Report on Past and Proposed Activities of Jaya FOSS ClubbyM. Jaya Engineering College is a pioneer in the Free and Open Source Software movement. The Jaya FOSS Club was established in the year 2006. The main objective of the club is to adopt and promote the Free and Open Source Software. Jaya Foss Club was built with the support from National Resource Centre for Free and Open Source Software(NRCFOSS) which is funded by Ministry of IT, Govt. of India and Indian Linux User Group, Chennai (ILUGC). The Club gets frequent help from C-DAC, Chennai, Collabnet and National Informatics Centre (NIC), for their continuous resource sharing with our students.
From the inception of the club, the members have conducted 38 advocacy programmes in various schools and colleges. The club conducts technical programmes such as workshops, technical talks, seminars, free software demo and the like, once in a week. These technical programmes are based on Free and Open Source Softwares.
Anna University introduced two electives in the area of Free and Open Source for B.E (Computer Science), B.Tech (IT) and MCA. The electives are
Jaya Engineering College is one of few colleges offers the elective courses on FOSS. So far, around 1,310 students have opted for these courses as electives, from our college. The College has 6 FOSS Labs with around 400 computers. Various GNU/Linux Distributions are installed and used in these Labs.
List of Events organised and participated in the Academic Year 2010-11
Our Student Ms M. B Aishwarya participated in the Prestigious GSoC 2010 and accepted her work on Enhancing Video Feature in Typo3.
Conducted online Quiz on Basics of Free and Open Source software for the first year students during third week of August 2010 and 284 students participated in the event through which they learn about basics of open source and free softwares.
Workshop on “CASE tools Lab” using Open Source Tools conducted on 9th July 2010 for IV year by Mr. Vanniyarajan and Mr. Selvam, who are experts in the field of python and case tools
Workshop on “Open Source Projects and Contribution towards community Projects” conducted on 15th July 2010 by Mr. P. Raman, senior member – ILUGC
Seminar on “Web 2.0” conducted on 17th July 2010 by Mr. P. Karthikeyan, Tata Consultancy Services.
Seminar on “ Open source – a way to success” conducted on 24th July 2010 by Mr. S. Gopal, CEO, NACE Solutions Pvt. Ltd
Software Freedom Day 2010 celebrated in association with ILUGC and CSI Student Chapter on 18th September 2010. Dr. S. Srinivasan, Project Scientist, was the Chief Guest for the celebration. The events conducted for the celebrations are Technical Talks by Professionals, Various Contest for Students and 40 Demo stalls on various free software. Delegates from US Mr. Jason Levit & Ms. Mishi Chowdary participated as Guest during valedictory of SFD'10.
Prof. M. Kumaran, Asst. Professor was nominated as one of the Advisory Committee member for FOSS Based Anna University Curriculum by NRCFOSS. Students of Jaya Foss Club participated in OSI Tech Days an International FOSS event held at Chennai Trade Centre during Sep 19-21, 2010. Students of III year and IV year attended the three days conference and was exposed to the international mix of culture in the field of Open source and gained more knowledge.
Prof. M. Kumaran have given a talk on “Free Software tools for Engineering Education” in Regional Convention for Academicians and Researchers held at IFMR on 14th Nov 2010.
Prof M. Kumaran has invited as Guest Speaker for National Workshop on Open Source Software by Angel College of Engineering, Tiruppur on 10.12.2010. Prof. R. Prasanna Kumar and Prof. G. Sundararaju has participated in FDP on Open Source Lab organised by St. Peters University from 22 – 24 June 2011. FOSS Centre I & II was Inaugurated by Our Honourable Chairman during may 2010.
Students from II, III and IV year numbering 26 participated in National Seminar on Open Source Technology organised by Adhiparasakthi Engineering College in association with TNSCST and NCSTS, New Delhi on 27th July 2011
Proposed Activities for the Academic Year 2011-2012
Today we are proceeding with Software Freedom Day '11 in a grand manner. The Events planned are Technical Talks and Workshop by Experts, Talks by Students(informal way - topic will be decided on the spot), Various Contest for Students, Demo on various Free Softwares(more than 50 demo stalls), Distribution of Free Linux and other Open source software CDs and Release of SFD Special News Letter.
Preliminary workshops planned for newly constituted 13 working groups during First Week of October 2011.
Planned to have collaborative work with some of the organization. We have already started our Collaborative work with Knack Forge, C-DAC and E-Ndicus. Some of the students are working with Open Source accounting software and Projects on Intelligent system.
This year Expected more contribution for the Community Projects, some of the students have already identified the problem area to contribute to the existing projects.
Planned to conduct more advocacy program in schools and colleges.
Planned to conduct training program for Govt. officials and mothers of schools students on basic open source tools.
Faculty Development Program on How to use Open Source tools for academic labs has planned in the month of December 1st week.
Plan to host National Level FOSS Conference (FOSSCONF'12) during first week of February 2011.
Weekly seminars and workshops planned on specific free and open source software technologies to cater the need of all the students from various discipline.
Planning to concentrate more on Consultancy, Funded projects, Training and Development. FOSS Centre can be utilized for these activities.
